Cornelia Sorabji

Cornelia was something else. She was the first woman to graduate from an Indian university, the first woman anywhere to get a law degree – from Oxford at that – and the first woman to represent the accused in a criminal case in a British-run court.

But she was also an arch-imperialist, extolling the British Empire and castigating the Indian independence movement. She said of Gandhi, “his truths were built upon deceptions.”

So how can we explain Cornelia? How can we understand Sorabji?

Join Oswin, Carla and our special guest Sathnam Sanghera, author of the ground-breaking Empireland, as we wrestle with this duality and try to make sense of the idea of ‘The Indian Imperialist’.
