Dédée

When you think of the French Resistance of World War II, you may picture an unshaven man, Gitanes pushed into the corner of his mouth, Sten gun cradled in the crook of his arm.

Well, that’s only half the picture. Because the women of Holland, Belgium and France ran much of the Resistance.

Codenamed Dédée, Andrée de Jongh led the biggest escape network in western Europe – helping hundreds of allied soldiers and aircrew make their way south from Belgium, through France and over the Pyrenees.

Join Oswin, Carla and the historian of women’s lives, the great Anne Sebba, as we retrace Dedee’s steps and try to make sense of woman’s role in the war.
